WHATS IN A NAME? MTS – Medical Transportation Services

The term Medical Transportation Services or MTS refers to the group of services that provide stable patient transportation under the regulation by the Ministry of Transportation. Medical Transportation Services are those that provide transportation for hospital patients, long term care residents and others that require specialized transportation, but do not meet the requirements for transport by an emergency ambulance service or EMS.

The types of services that are considered to be Medical Transportation Services or MTS can include, but are not limited to Non-Emergency Ambulance Transportation Services such as AmbuTrans, patient transfer services and stretcher transport services.

At present, Medical Transportation Services are not included as services regulated under the Ambulance Act of Ontario. However, there is a strong case to be made for the Province to extend the scope of this Act to include, at least, the higher end Medical Transportation Services such as AmbuTrans.
Medical Transportation Services provide transportation for those requiring stretcher transportation for hospital admissions or discharges, x-ray appointments, cancer treatments, dialysis sessions, orthopaedic or fracture clinic appointments, minor surgery procedures and for many other medical reasons.
